Ikea giving away spam for free

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Ikea’s mail server has been sending out spam and phishing emails thanks to some lax security on their web site.

"Ikea’s problems were caused because the contact template on the firm’s home page was inadequately secured, allowing hackers to insert alternative email addresses in a contact form," said Geoff Sweeney, chief technology officer at Tier-3.

"This basically allowed anyone with a little technical knowledge to generate millions of phishing and/or spam messages from Ikea’s mail servers using a simple script."

The potential damage to the company’s reputation, and the possibility of email blacklisting, could be significant, according to the security expert.

ACTION: Ensure that your contact form is not a simple html form but a script based form. If possible use captcha security as an added facility.

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Tom is a great example of irresponsibility that is happening on Facebook

Well, I want to get more spam, so hopefully the spam harvesters will come by here and pick up this email address so that I can pick up spam. What get’s me about air heads like Tom is that it’s not him that has to manage the spam and besides when it get’s all to much you just create another email.

January Phishing has begun

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Over the last few years surges in phishing and other online fraud attempts have coincided with the arrival of December’s credit card bills in the second and third weeks of January.

2008 sees the same thing happening.

"Phishers are getting better all the time at optimizing the relevancy factor of their attacks — analyzing human behaviors and interposing themselves credibly at the right moment to maximize their chances of successful fraud," said Andrew Klein, director of Email Security at SonicWALL.

"In the November to December gift-giving season, individuals who normally make only a few credit card purchases a month are suddenly doing multiple transactions. Not only is there a large volume, but people use different financial instruments and it’s just not easy to remember everything that they’ve bought, and how they paid for it. When people are uncertain they are vulnerable to trickery, which cyber criminals are counting on."

ACTION: Remembr that your bank, credit card or any financial intermediary will not send you an email asking you to confirm anything. If you need to attend to account maintenance do it via their web site not via a link in a supposedy "real" email.

Aweber and Autocontactor in trouble

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

I’ve been testing Gmail with a vengance in the last month and it just loves to dump Aweber and Autocontactor emails in the spam bin.

I canged my email address on 9 newsletters I subscribe to who sue these two systems, thinkign they cut through the spam trap issues, because of their "credibility".

Oops … every email sent by these "internationally recognised" marketers ended up in Gmail Spam. Not ONE got through as a "real live email"

So I’m keeping an eagle eye out on things … are you?

Do you bother or let the auto delete thing happen as Gmail does so nicely for you?

ACTION: If you use Gmail or other filter based process remember …. Filters don’t work as you have been led to believe.
